Despite the chaos, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation that was not as successful as IV. The group managed to release an album that was chart-topping, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. The album was the last of Toto's lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new singer.

Line-up

The album's third, Turn Back, marked the return to the traditional sextet arrangement of previous albums. It was a more ferocious, consistent effort with a harder edge than Hydra. The more experimental sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the maturation in the group. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing ability to play was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work was sharper, more intricate, and less derivative than on previous recordings.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live performance in Amsterdam which was released as a set of two CDs called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. In 1998, Paich and Lukather started looking through old demo tapes and tapes to make an album that would feature songs that had never been recorded before. By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New was a commercial failure and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis, which affected his singing abilities.
